Bangladesh start SAFF campaign beating Bhutan 2-0

DHAKA, Sept 4, 2018 (BSS)- Bangladesh got off to a auspicious start in
the Suzuki SAFF Championship when they beat Bhutan by 2-0 goals in their
Group A opening match held at Bangabandhu National Stadium here today.

With this victory, Bangladesh also took their sweet revenge of their
Asia Cup prequalifying match defeat to Bhutan.

The day’s win saw Bangladesh to open their account with three points from
one match while Bhutan failed to gain any point playing the same number of
match.

Bangladesh went ahead early in the very 2nd minute from a penalty.
Thailand referee Sivakorn Pu-Udom awarded the spot kick in favour of
Bangladesh when Chencho fouled Atiqur Rahman Fahad in the danger zone after
Wali Faisal provided a corner kick at the right wing. Topu Bormon made no
mistake to score from the penalty.

Bangladesh again got another scoring chance in the 7th minute. After
taking the ball from midfield, Mahbubur Rahman ran down with his solo effort
and took a shot, but Bhutan custodian Dendup resisted the ball brilliantly.

After the resumption, Bangladesh again launched attack in the 46th
minute when Topu Bormon’s well-judge header from inside D-box sailed
harmlessly over the cross bar.

However, Mahbubur Rahman sealed the victory for Bangladesh in the 47th
minute with an eye-catching shot. Receiving a lofted cross from mid field
onrushing Mahbubur sent the ball home with a powerful angular shot from a
vantage position giving no chance to Bhutan custodian Dendup under the bar.

After conceding two goals, the Bhutan footballers seemed lack of sprit
in the second half and they failed to put any pressure on the Bangladesh side
as the ball was confined in the mid field during most of the second half.

The host notched the victory playing good football in the entire
proceeding especially in the first half while Bhutan were totally off-colored
on the day and failed to produce any scoring chance.

Bangladesh will play their next group match against Pakistan while
Bhutan against Nepal on Thursday (September 6) at the same venue.

Earlier, in the day’s another group A match, Pakistan stunned Nepal by 2-
1 goals.
