Duck farming changes Hena’s life

DHAKA, Sept 4, 2018 (BSS) – Hena Begum, a duck farmer (khamari) has become the talk of the haor area for her outstanding work as she turned herself into a successful self reliant woman in the area.

She and her husband Nayan Khan jointly operating a duck farm at Khan Bari village of Dewghar union under Austagram haor upazila of Kishoreganj district.

Initially, Hena started her duck farm with 500 ducks. Now the firm has 2000 ducks. Of them, around 1300-1500 ducks lay eggs daily. She said this season her total profit will be around Taka 3 lakh after meeting all expenditures.

This will be her ever big amount of profit from this duck farm. At present two male laborers are working at her farm on contractual basis for six months. After egg-laying season, all ducks will be sold at local market Chatolpar Bazaar as that time farming ducks will be non-profitable. The woman khamari said without egg duck farming is a losing project. That’s why she sells her farm ducks after egg laying season every year.

In 2006, Hena and her husband started this farm at Savianagar Bazar launch ghat, adjacent to the Khan Bari by taking Taka one lakh loan from Austagram Krishi Bank branch. Later it has been shifted to maijkandi of nearest village Pawn for better natural food source of ducks.

Hena said she maintain financial and basic planning of their farm and her husband Nayan looks after farm and participate marketing with two labors.

Nayan said now they are a financially solvent family. He gives all credit to his wife Hena for everything as she inspired and implemented their long lasting dream.

By the profit of the duck farming, Hena has bought one acre of cropland, two cows and deposited some handsome money to the local bank.

According to Hena, now she is happy and self confident after becoming self reliant. Dewghar Union Parishad chairman Md Ibrahim Mian said “Hena and her husband Nayan Khan often come to consult about their duck farm. I always try to solve their problems and encourage them to run the farm. They have brightened our faces and I have assured them to provide any kind of assistance to this end.”

Austagram upazila agriculture officer (in-charge) Abdul Monnaf said he is aware of the success of Hena and Nayan. But he wants to see more people as duck farmers like them as Austagram haor is a suitable place for duck farming. Upazila agriculture office will always assist them, he added.
