Use of EVM depends on its acceptability to all: CEC

DHAKA, Sept 03, 2018 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today said the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) in the next parliament election depends on its acceptability to all concerned quarters.

“Use of EVM depends on its acceptability to all quarters, formulation of law in this regard and training of EC officials,” he told the inaugural ceremony of a training workshop on EVM at Electoral Training Institute (ETI) at Agargaon here.

The CEC said if the government formulates law on the use of EVM and the atmosphere remains congenial, the EVM will be used on the basis of random sampling in some constituencies.

He said if EVM is used in the election, the cost of holding election would come down.

Around 70 percent of cost in conducting election is meant for law enforcement agencies, he said adding that the cost will reduce if EVM technology is applied.

ETI Director General Mostafa Faruq chaired the function while Secretary of Election Commission Secretariat Helal Uddin Ahmed attended it as the special guest.
