Janmashtami celebrated in country

DHAKA, Sept 2, 2018 (BSS) – The holy Janmashtami, the birth celebration of Sri Krishna and one of the major festivals of the Hindu community, was observed today in the capital and elsewhere across the country with due religious fervour and enthusiasm.

According to the Hindu Puran (mythology), Sri Sri Krishna was born on the eighth tithi of Shukla Pakkha (fortnight of the new moon) in the Bangla month of Bhadra and he takes birth in ages in the world to safeguard the good and pious people from the hands of bad persons by establishing truth, justice and beauty in all sphere of the society.

Different political, socio-cultural and religious organisations chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the Janmashtami.

The day was a public holiday.

In separate messages, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted members of the Hindu community on the occasion of Janmashtami.

To mark the festival, President Abdul Hamid also hosted a reception to the eminent citizens of Hindu community at Bangabhaban at 11 am today with a call to continue communal harmony to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh as envisioned by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

National dailies published special articles while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, private TV channels and radio stations aired special programmes highlighting different aspects of the eventful life of Sri Krishna and activities among his disciples during the worldly days.

The Mohanagar Sarbojonin Puja Committee has taken a two-day programme at the Dhakeshwari National Temple to mark the birth festival of Lord Krishna.

The programme includes prayers for welfare of the nation and the country tomorrow through Sri Sri Geeta Jagya at 8 am.

A colourful Janmashtami procession was brought out at 3 pm from the Dakeswari National Temple today and ended at Bahadur Shah Park after parading different city streets, including Palasy Crossing, Central Shaheed Minar, Doel Chhattar, High Court, Dhaka South City Corporation Building, Gulistan and Nawabpur Road.

Worshiping of Krishna will be held at night.

Earlier, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal spoke at a discussion organized by Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Committee and Mohanagar Sarbojonin Puja Committee (MSPC) at the Palasy intersection.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokan formally inaugurated the Janmashtami procession with MSPC president Shoilendra Majumdar in the chair.

As per the programme, a discussion and a cultural event will be held at Dhakeshwari National Temple tomorrow.

The birth festival of Sri Krishna was also celebrated through similar programmes in different districts across the country, including Chittagong, Jessore, Narayanganj, Pabna, Sherpur, Barguna, Barishal, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Dinajpur, Khulna, Habiganj, Thakurgaon and Netrakona.
