Indian opposition leader’s brother-in-law probed over land scam

NEW DELHI, Sept 2, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – Indian police have probed the
brother-in-law of the country’s main opposition Congress party chief Rahul
Gandhi in a land scam in northern Indian state of Haryana’s Gurgaon city.

“A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against Gandhi’s brother-
in-law Robert Vadra, a businessman, and former Chief Minister of Haryana
Bhupinder Singh Hooda, for their role in irregularities in land deals in
Gurgaon,” a police official said Sunday.

The FIR, which was lodged Saturday on the basis of a complaint filed by a
local farmer, accused Vadra’s company of purchasing land in various parts of
Gurgaon at low cost from a real estate developer in 2013 and selling it back
at a higher cost after a change in classification.

“Real estate developer DLF has also been named in the case for selling and
buying the land back from Vadra, while Hooda, who was then chief minister of
Haryana, has been booked for facilitating the land classification,” the
official said.

Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, has denied the
charges.

“It’s an attempt to distract people from real issues. It’s election season
and there is an increase in oil prices, so let’s divert the real issues of
people,” he told media. Enditem
