Steps taken for registration of poultry farmers

RAJSHAHI, Aug 31, 2018 (BSS)-Steps have been taken to bring all the
poultry farmers and feed sellers under registration aims at ensuring safe and
good poultry farming practices for sound public health.

Department of Livestock Services (DLS) has taken the decision at a meeting
with district and upazila level DLS officials, poultry farmers and other
stakeholders.

Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organized the meeting at Paba
Upazila DLS office on Thursday afternoon in association with an issue-based
project titled ‘Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector in Bangladesh’,
UKaid and British Council.

Chaired by District Livestock Officer (DLO) Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain,
the meeting was addressed, among others, by Upazila Livestock Officer Ismail
Haque, Veterinary Surgeon Dr Khandaker Sagar Ahmed, Poultry Farmer Moina
Begum, Feed Seller Rejaul Karim, CAB Field Coordinator Omor Decosta and Field
Officers Mohidul Hassan and Mozammel Haque.

The experts unanimously said ensuring a good poultry farming practice is
very important for sound public health.

Utmost emphasis should be given to bringing all the poultry farmers,
traders, feed manufactures, sellers and others concerned under necessary
training to enhance their awareness in this regard.

Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain gave an overview of the region’s poultry
sector. He puts forward a set of recommendations to make the poultry sector
safe and hygienic.

He said the role of farmers and retailers is very important to ensure feed
safety with resisting high-powered antibiotics use in it.

Dr Akhter Hossain opined that using high-powered and overrated antibiotic
in poultry feed is harmful to public health. So, time has come to look into
the matter with utmost emphasis.

There is no alternative to safe poultry feed and good poultry farming
management, he added.
