Nasim hands over appointment letters to 550 midwives

DHAKA, August 30, 2018 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim today handed over appointment letters to 550 midwives for ensuring safe delivery and reduce maternal mortality rate in the country.

“We are committed to providing quality education and deploying skilled midwives particularly in upazila and union-level health facilities, because Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the commitment in 2010 to ensure safe delivery,” said the minister.

He was addressing as the chief guest a programme titled, ‘Recruitment and Orientation Programme for Registered Midwives’ organised by the ministry at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in city’s Farmgate area.

Nasim laid emphasis on increasing the numbers of trained and skilled midwives in the country to reduce mother and child mortality rates.

“I believe it is possible to check deaths of mothers and children through creating massive mass awareness, educating mothers and building skilled midwives,” he said.

The government led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched midwifery as a separate profession with the help of UNFPA in 2010 and now there are around 34 midwifery training centres across the country.

The government’s target is to accelerate the progress of creating midwives and bring down the maternal death rate, he added.

Nasim also urged the midwives to serve the patients with their motherly affection and ensure safe delivery.

Secretary (In-charge) Medical Education and Family Planning Division and representatives from UNFPA, British High Commission, Canadian High Commission, Sweden Embassy also spoke, among others.
