Experts for strengthening local government institutions to attain SDGs

RAJSHAHI, Aug 30, 2018 (BSS) – Experts at a workshop here today said
effective local government institutions, especially Upazila Parishad and
Union Parishad (UP), can play a vital role in achieving the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).

They said all the government and non-government officials and public
representative concerned should work together to make Upazila Parishads and
UPs strengthened, efficient and accountable.

District Administration in association with the United Nation Development
Programme (UNDP) arranged the workshop at the conference hall of Deputy
Commissioner’s office here.

Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader addressed the inaugural session of
the workshop as the chief guest with Deputy Director of Local Government
Division Parvej Raihan in the chair.

Deputy National Project Director of Efficient and Accountable Local
Governance (EALG) Project Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury and Project Coordinator
Abu Shahin Ashaduzzaman also spoke on the occasion.

The speakers said ensuring transparency, accountability and citizens’
participation in different development works is an urgent to establish good
governance in local government institutions.

They stressed the need for strengthening local government institutions for
strong democracy and its institutionalisation at grassroots level.
