Int’l conference on Indian Ocean opens in Vietnam’s capital

HANOI, Aug 28, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) -An international conference on the Indian Ocean kicked off here on Monday, with the participation of 280 delegates from 43 countries and regions.

Addressing the opening session of the third Indian Ocean Conference themed “Building Regional Architectures” on Monday evening, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Nepalese Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Upendra Yadav, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Singaporean Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan shared their views about building a regional architecture which is inclusive and respects international law.

During the two-day conference, 47 prominent speakers and other delegates are to attend nine sessions, centering their discussions on economic, trade and security issues in the Indian Ocean region and then putting forth measures on building trust, respecting international laws and norms, peacefully solving sea disputes, and dealing with non-traditional threats.

The two previous editions of the conference were held in 2016 and 2017 in Singapore and Sri Lanka respectively.
