DHAKA, Aug 27, 2018 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said strict measures are to be taken to stop plying of three-wheelers on national highways to curb road accidents.

“We have taken 18-point decisions to ensure road safety. As per the decisions plying of three-wheelers, including CNG and battery-run auto-rickshaw, leguna and easybike, will be stopped on national highways,” he told newsmen after a meeting of Road Transport Advisory Council (RTAC) at the Secretariat this afternoon.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon and high officials of different ministries were present in the meeting, among others.

Quader, also Awami League general secretary, said the 18-point decisions included stopping import of spare parts of three-wheelers and limiting maximum speed of bus to 80 kilometer to avoid road accidents.

He said manpower of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has already been increased to provide better service.

The minister also said they will take all-out efforts to remove all sorts of irregularities in the transport sector.

About the recent accidents on highways, Quader said legal actions will be taken against those who will be found guilty in the incidents after getting the investigation report. He said a committee headed by DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon was formed to turn the transport sector into an industry.

The committee will take necessary initiatives to remove problems in transport sector in the capital, he added.
