Grenade attack carried out to consolidate power: Qamrul Islam

DHAKA, Aug 27, 2018 (BSS) – Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam today said the monstrous grenade attack on Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, was carried out to consolidate power.

“The attack was carried out with the direct backing from the state. Then government staged Judge Miah drama to cover up the real incident. The arguments in the case filed over the attack are going on in the trial court and we are expecting that the verdict will be pronounced in September,” he said.

The minister came up with the observation while addressing a memorial meeting marking the 14th martyrdom anniversary of Ivy Rahman, former president of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League and wife of late President Zillur Rahman.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the meeting at National Press Club while its leader Arup Sarker Rana conducted the meeting with Adviser of the organisation Chitta Ranjan Das in the chair.

The meeting was also attended by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) president Molla Jalal, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president Abu Zafar Surja and general secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, among others.

Warning BNP and its allies not to repeat their mayhem that they carried out in past, Food Minister Qamrul Islam said you are very good at hatching conspiracy.

“But we would not tolerate anymore plotting and arson terror, which can take the country towards destruction. People themselves will resist such crimes. It is a challenge for the pro-independence force,” he said.

Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said the attack on August 21, 2004, was carried out to eliminate Awami League and he urged BNP to shun the path of conspiracy and take part in election.
