Grenade attack carried out to consolidate power: Qamrul Islam

DHAKA, Aug 27, 2018 (BSS) – Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam today said
the monstrous grenade attack on Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, was
carried out to consolidate power.

“The attack was carried out with the direct backing from the state. Then
government staged Judge Miah drama to cover up the real incident. The
arguments in the case filed over the attack are going on in the trial court
and we are expecting that the verdict will be pronounced in September,” he
said.

The minister came up with the observation while addressing a memorial
meeting marking the 14th martyrdom anniversary of Ivy Rahman, former
president of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League and wife of late President Zillur
Rahman.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the meeting at National Press Club
while its leader Arup Sarker Rana conducted the meeting with Adviser of the
organisation Chitta Ranjan Das in the chair.

The meeting was also attended by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists
(BFUJ) president Molla Jalal, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president Abu
Zafar Surja and general secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, among others.

Warning BNP and its allies not to repeat their mayhem that they carried
out in past, Food Minister Qamrul Islam said you are very good at hatching
conspiracy.

“But we would not tolerate anymore plotting and arson terror, which can
take the country towards destruction. People themselves will resist such
crimes. It is a challenge for the pro-independence force,” he said.

Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said the
attack on August 21, 2004, was carried out to eliminate Awami League and he
urged BNP to shun the path of conspiracy and take part in election.
