DHAKA, Aug 26, 2018 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today said the government is not taking any move to export the rawhide aimed at expanding the country’s leather industry as it is one of the top export earning sectors.

“The government is providing necessary support to develop the country’s leather sector,” he told journalists after exchanging Eid greetings with officials and employees of his ministry at secretariat here.

The minister said the sale of rawhide of sacrificial animals will end soon as the government has taken different steps to this end.

He said the main reason behind the rawhide crisis is non-functioning of many tanneries at the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate (STIE) and non-operation of the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP).

The plot owners of the STIE are yet to possess ownership documents and they haven’t any bank loan facilities, he said adding that as the banks are reopened after the Eid, the tanners fund crunch will also be resolved.
