Bangabandhu enacted RPO to establish democratic rights of people

DHAKA, Aug 25, 2018 (BSS) – Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman enacted The Representation of the People Order, 1972 (RPO), aimed at establishing the democratic rights of the people.

“Bangabandhu formulated the RPO to establish democratic rights of the country people. The RPO is the pillar of all the electoral laws. It is still helping to accelerate the democratic process of the country,” Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq told BSS while replying to a query about Bangabandhu’s contribution to overall development of electoral management.

“As many as 10 parliamentary elections were held since Bangladesh achieved independence in 1971 and all the elections were on the basis of the RPO,” he continued.

“Bangabandhu not only formulated RPO but also gave constitution to the people which protect the right of democracy, electoral process and choose the process of public representatives,” he said, adding that Bangabandhu had believed in electing public representatives.

“Bangabandhu had belief in democracy. He had fought for his entire life to establish democracy and democratic rights of the people and sacrificed enough to this noble cause,” the minister said.

He said the RPO was formulated at that time by the directives of Bangabandhu. The aim of the RPO was to hold election in a free and fair manner, he added.
