Animal waste to be removed in 24 hours in city

DHAKA, Aug 19, 2018 (BSS) – Both Dhaka South and North City Corporations
have taken various measures involving around 21,000 cleaners to remove the
waste of sacrificial animals within 24 hours during the Eid-ul-Azha aiming to
keep the city clean and check pollution.

A total of 1,054 spots have been designated in the city for slaughtering
sacrificial animals on Eid day so that the animal waste could be managed
properly, officials said.

The leave of staff of the city corporations’ Waste Management Department
has already been canceled in this regard, they said, adding that hotlines
would be kept open for quick removal of animal waste during the Eid.

Around five lakh polythene bags will be distributed among the city
dwellers to remove waste easily.

Mayors of two city corporations will formally inaugurate the activities of
waste management programmes in their respective city corporations at 2 pm on
the Eid day.

Around five lakh animals will be sacrificed in the capital on the occasion
of Eid-ul-Azha this year, which will produce about 30,000 tonnes of wastes
here.

Some 11,271 cleaners will work in the DSCC area while 350 machines
including 10 pay-loaders will be used for quick removal of animal waste,
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) additional chief waste management officer
Khondkar Milladul Islam told BSS.

He said a hotline – 09611000999 – will remain open for quick management of
waste while 1.75 lakh plastic bags will be distributed among city dwellers
free of cost.

“Leaflets will be distributed and campaign will be conducted through
loudspeaker with a view to making people aware of the proper management of
animal waste,” he added.

Milladul said they are encouraging the city dwellers to slaughter their
sacrificial animals in the designated spots of the city corporation.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) additional chief waste management
officer Abul Hasnat Md Ashraful Islam said some 9,500 cleaners will work in
the DNCC area while necessary machines including dump trucks, bulldozers,
long arm excavators, pay-loaders and chain dozers will be used for quick
removal of animal waste.

He said a temporary central control room will be set up at Mahakhali.
Hotline number – 029830936 – will remain open. Besides, mobile numbers in
five city areas will be kept open 24 hours.

City dwellers are requested to communicate with the authorities concerned
using the numbers to extend their cooperation for the proper management of
animal waste.
