BB, police checking inflow of fake currency in cattle markets

DHAKA, Aug 19, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh Bank (BB) and police have taken some cautionary measures to check inflow of fake notes in the cattle markets centering the Eid-ul-Azha.

“We have already distributed over 400 fake currency detecting machines across the country as per requisition of the law enforcement agencies to check use and spread of counterfeit notes in the cattle market “, Chief Spokesperson and also Executive Director M Serajul Islam of the central bank told BSS here today.

All the public and private banks have already been given responsibilities for setting up machines and booths at the cattle markets to identify counterfeit note and take action accordingly, he also said.

The central bank has requested authorities of city corporations, municipalities and upazila administrations to extend their support to BB in their endavour to check counterfeit currency. Assistant Inspector General (AIG-media) of police Sohel Rana told BSS, “Intelligence surveillance has been intensified across the country to check production, circulation and use of fake currencies well before starting Eid-ul-Azha.”

In a recent meeting at Police Headquarters, all the concerned authorities have been ordered to take necessary measures, including stepping up intelligence surveillance across the country, to prevent production and circulation of fake currencies, he also said.

The law enforcers have been instructed to intensify intelligence vigilance at three tiers to stop production, circulation and use of fake notes ahead of the Eid.

The directives came from a recent meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Md Javed Patwary presiding. All the police commissioners, deputy inspector generals (DIGs) and concerned police supers were present at the meeting.

As per directives of the police headquarters, intelligence vigilance coinciding with crackdowns has been strengthened across the country to stop circulation of fake currency particularly in the capital city.

Law enforcers have been asked to conduct special drives after identifying the places where the counterfeit bank notes are being produced and used. Due to being alert against fake currency, police arrested eight members of a racket including its ringleader along with fake local currency worth about Taka 75 lakh from the capital’s Lalbagh area on Friday evening.

“We arrested eight persons along with counterfeit currency worth about Taka 75 lakh from Lalbagh area around 7.10pm on Friday,” said a DB official.

They also seized fake currency making equipment including a laptop, two colour printers, printers, skin board and different types of papers including foil papers, from their possessions.

The arrestees were identified as Kawsar Hamid, Alauddin, Nazrul Islam, Md Mostofa, Md Sohel, Md Mojibur Rahman alias Badsha, Md Sajib, Hossain, and Saleha Begum.
