TUXTLA GUTIRREZ, Mexico, Aug 17, 2018 (BSS/AFP) – Mexican authorities
arrested 48 alleged members of the powerful Jalisco New Generation drug
cartel in raids near the Guatemalan border, prosecutors in the state of
Chiapas said Thursday.

The raids were carried out by state and federal police and the army as the
suspects traveled to Guatemala, said district prosecutor Javier Lopez
Gonzalez.

Authorities seized vehicles, guns and 5.7-caliber bullets known as “police
killers.”

Lopez said Jalisco New Generation does not have operations in Chiapas.

The cartel is based in the western state of Jalisco, but has expanded its
operations across Mexico as the rival Sinaloa cartel has lost territory since
its leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was extradited to the United States
last year.

Mexico’s cartels have expanded their operations into other Latin American
countries in recent years, including Guatemala.
