Eminent journalist Golam Sarwar no more

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2018 (BSS) – Eminent Journalist and Dainik Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar died this evening at a Singapore hospital after spending a 75 years of colourful life.

Family sources and colleagues at the Samakal newspaper said Sarwar breathed his last at 9.25pm (Bangladesh time) at the Singapore General Hospital where he was being treated for various ailments.

Samakal Chief Reporter Loton Ekram told BSS that the elderly journalist was kept in life-support system since this afternoon as his condition deteriorated.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives and admirers.

On August 3, Sarwar, also the president of Editors’ Council, was taken to Singapore by an air-ambulance for better treatment.

On the next day, he was admitted to Singapore General Hospital.

Earlier on July 29, the eminent journalist was admitted to Lab-Aid hospital in the capital due to cardiac diseases and lung complications.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave condolence messages at the death of the journalist.

They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Born on April 1 in 1943 at Banaripara of Barisal, Sarwar obtained his honors and master’s degrees from the Dhaka University (DU).

In his student life in 1962, he started his career as a university correspondent at Dainik Azadi.

In the same year, he joined Dainik Sangbad as a sub-editor. He worked at the daily till March 25 in 1971. He actively participated in the Liberation War.

After the independence, he served as the headmaster of Banaripara Union Institution. Later in 1972, he joined Dainik Ittefaq as a senior sub-editor. He also served as joint news editor and news editor at the newspaper till 1999.

In 1999, he became the editor of Dainik Jugantor and in 2005 he joined Dainik Samakal as the founding editor. He served as the editor at the newspaper till his death.

He also served as the chairman of the board of directors of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) and member of board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

Golam Sarwar was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2014 for his contribution to the field of journalism.
