Efforts underway to identify attackers of journalists: DMP

DHAKA, August 11, 2018 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah today said efforts have been underway to identify the culprits involved in attacks on journalists during the students’ protests.

“Attacks on journalists were sad. Police are working to identify attackers,” he told a press conference at DMP Media Center in the city.

The commissioner said journalists who came under attack could file cases and police would take actions against the attackers after receiving allegations.

Referring to the traffic system, he said police would be on the hard-line against traffic rules violators and none would be spared in this regard.

“We have extended the Traffic Week by three days, from August 12 to 14, after getting positive results from the ongoing programme that began on August 5,” the DMP chief said.

He said on the sixth day of the Traffic Week, police lodged 52,417 cases against different vehicles and took actions against 11, 405 drivers for traffic rule violations including driving on the wrong side, not having driving licenses and fitness certificates.

“We have realized over Taka three crore as fines during the period,” said Asaduzzaman Miah.

He said after two days of the students’ protest miscreants or intruders entered it and they attacked Rajarbagh police lines, Kafrul, Mirpur thanas and BGB gate.

Besides, they launched arson attacks on Science Laboratory Police Box and vandalized Awami League President’s Office at Dhanmondi, Asaduzzaman Miah said, adding that six policemen received injuries and they were admitted to hospitals.

“The tender-age students did not do it. Everything was done by miscreants. Police are ready to ensure public security,” he said.
