Five factories join UNICEF’s Better Business for Children initiative

DHAKA, August 09, 2018 (BSS)- Four leading garment manufacturers and a footwear company signed a memorandum of understanding today with UNICEF to join its Better Business for Children initiative.

These manufacturers include Apex Footwear, Hams Garments, Mohammadi Group, Pioneer Knitwears and Texeurop, said a UNICEF press release.

They are all business partners of El Corte Ingl,s, Europe’s largest department store group, which is supporting the Better Business for Children initiative.

UNICEF has been working in partnership with the ready-made garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh since the partnership went full swing in 2017 with 10 leading RMG manufacturers.

With the addition of five new factories, UNICEF will reach an additional 24,000 workers, including 11,500 female workers. So far, the programme has reached more than 32,000 workers, of which 19,500 are women.

“We are delighted to welcome you to our Better Business for Children programme. Now, you have become part of a group of business pioneers in Bangladesh and around the world who see their role in society in a broader way. This is a strategic decision and certainly a wise move as investing more in the workers, the communities and the environment yields positive returns for your businesses as well,” said Edouard Beigbeder, Representative, UNICEF Bangladesh.

The five manufacturers joining the programme will first undertake assessments to understand how their operations directly and indirectly impact children. Then they will choose areas in which they commit to make investments that benefit mothers and children.
