DHAKA, Aug 9, 2018 (BSS)- With a view to increasing awareness on lightning
disaster, a daylong seminar and workshop was held here today at Military
Institute of Science and Technology (MIST).
Electric, Electronic and Communication Engineering (EECE) Department of
MIST organised the programme titled “Lightning and Thunderstorm: Forecasting,
Awareness and Protection”, said an ISPR press release.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharrof Hossain addressed the
programme as the chief guest while Major General Md Abul Khair, ndc, P Engg,
Commandant, MIST was the chief patron of the seminar.
The speakers said lightning is identified as one of the major causes of
weather-related deaths. It was declared as a natural disaster in Bangladesh
in 2016 when 81 people lost their lives in just two days, they added.
They mentioned that occurrences of lightning disasters have increased due
to climate change in recent years.
The programme consisted of technical talks for spreading awareness and
knowledge of prevention and protection from natural disasters caused by
lightning, followed by a workshop.
The primary objective of the seminar was to impart knowledge so that one
can understand the significance of lightning protection and take necessary
steps accordingly.
The technical session covered discussions on lightning incidents in
Bangladesh including precaution and safety measures against it.
A workshop was also held at the end which provided hands on practical
knowledge on designing a lightning arrester.
Representatives from various ministries, three services, government and
autonomous organisations, universities and service providing agencies
attended the seminar.
