Govt firm to ensure communal harmony: President

DHAKA, Aug 8, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid stressed promoting non-
communal spirit among the people of all regions as a delegation of Bangladesh
Hindu Kalyan Trust led by Religious Minister Principal Motiur Rahman made a
courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban this afternoon.

“Bangladesh is a unique example of communal harmony in the world . . . Our
constitution ensures equal rights of the people of all faiths, irrespective
of colour, creed or gender,” his press secretary Joynal Abedin quoted the
President as saying during the meeting.

Abdul Hamid said the government is firm to ensure communal harmony so that
people of every religion can celebrate their respective rituals and festivals
with festivity and religious ferver.

The President was apprised by the delegation of the overall activities of
the Bangladesh Hindu Kalyan Trust (Bangladesh Hindu Welfare Trust), which was
sponsored by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

During the call on, the delegation demanded that the government establish
a separate foundation for the welfare and development of the Hindu community.

The religious affairs minister informed the President that the Hindu
community has taken a special programme to go on the pilgrimage for the first
time and half of the expenses will be borne by the trust.

The trustees sought all-out cooperation of the President to perform their
overall religious rites.

President Hamid assured them of providing all necessary supports to run the
trust.
