DHAKA, Aug 8, 2018 (BSS) – The 88th birth anniversary of Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib was observed in the city and elsewhere in the country today with due respect.
Begum Fazilatunnessa, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and mother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, embraced martyrdom along with Bangabandhu and other family members in a brutal predawn attack by some disgruntled army personnel on August 15 in 1975.
The birth anniversary was observed nationally this year. The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs took different programmes marking the anniversary.
The ministry organized a discussion marking the anniversary at Bangabandhu International Conference Center. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
A documentary on Bangamata was screened after the discussion.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages marking the day.
Besides, the ruling Awami League, its associate bodies and other likeminded organizations paid rich tributes to Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Muijb placing wreaths at her grave at the Banani Graveyard here.
The day-long programme began at 8 in the morning through the placing of wreaths on her grave by AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and other leaders.
Awami League Presidium Members Advocate Sahara Khatun, Dr Abdur Razzak, Muhammad Faruque Khan and Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, Joint General Secretaries Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, Organising Secretaries Ahmad Hossain, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, AKM Anamul Haque Shamim and Barrister Muhibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, among others, were present.
Leaders and workers of different organizations including AL and its associate bodies also offered Quran Khwani, milad and doa mahfils near the grave seeking divine blessings and eternal peace of the departed soul of Bangamata.
Later, leaders and workers of Awami League North and South City unit, Juba League (JL), Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League (SL), Jatiya Sramik League, Mahila Awami League, Juba Mahila League, Krishak League, Tanti League, Bangamata Parishad, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote and many other organizations also placed wreaths on her grave marking the birth anniversary.
AL Relief and Social Welfare Sub Committee distributed foods and clothes among the orphans, disabled and destitute people marking the birth anniversary of Bangamata Salimullha Atimkhana ground in city’s Azimpur area.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader addressed the programme as the chief guest with the sub-committee Chairman AFM Fakhrul Islam Munsi in the chair.
AL Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, sub-committee member Saifunnabi Chowdhury Sagar and local ward councilor Hasibur Rahman Manik also spoke on the occasion.
Marking the anniversary, Women Journalist Network, Bangladesh (WJNB) organized a discussion titled ‘Bangaleer Mukti Sanggrame Fazilatunnesa Mujib’ at Jatiya Press Club (JPC).
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury addressed the discussion as the chief guest with JPC General Secretary Farida Yeasmin in the chair.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Chief Editor Abul Kalam Azad, former Chief Information Commissioner Professor Dr Golam Rahman, the daily Bangladesher Khabar Azizul Islam Bhuiyan and Fazilatun Nesa Bappi, among others, addressed the discussion.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote arranged a discussion at JPC at 11am. AL Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud addressed the discussion as the chief guest while Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam was the key speaker.
Besides, Bangamata Parishad organized a discussion at National Museum at 4pm. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
On this day in 1930, Begum Fazilatunnessa nicknamed ‘Renu’ was born in remote Tungipara village in Gopalganj subdivision which was later upgraded to a district.
