NEW DELHI Nov 7, 2017 (BSS/XINHUA) — At least 13 people have been killed and nine others injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said Tuesday.

“The accident occurred around midnight Monday when a van collided with a truck on Ahmedabad-Indore highway near Kathlal in the state’s Kheda district,” a police official said.

While 13 people, including the driver, were killed on the spot, those injured were admitted to a nearby hospital where the condition of four are said to be serious, he said.

The van was overloaded as it was carrying 22 people, including the driver, way past its capacity.

“Passersby told us that the van was travelling at high speed and its driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident,” the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said.

India has one of the highest numbers of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads or vehicles.
