Alleged drug trader killed in ‘encounter’ in Gaibandha

RANGPUR, Aug 7, 2018 (BSS) – An alleged top drug trader was killed in an ‘encounter’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13) at village Jamal under Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district in the early hours of today.

“The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 47, of village Satgiri Purbopara (Fakirpara) in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha,” said a RAB-13 press release issued by its Media Officer ASP Khondker Golam Mortuza here today.

The shootout occurred when an operational team of RAB-13 conducted an anti-drug drive in the area on secret information and ordered some 4 to 5 drug traders gathered there to surrender.

But, the drug traders opened gunfire on the raiding elite force forcing to retaliate in self-defense and the encounter continued for about 10 minutes.

“When the shooting stopped, the drug trader was found laying on the spot with bullet injury though his other cohorts could flee from the scene,” the release said, adding that two members of RAB-13 were injured in the incident.

The elite force immediately rushed the injured person to Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex where the attending physician declared him dead.

A total of 28 cases were pending against him with different police stations of Gaibandha district.

“After searching the area, the elite force seized a foreign-made pistol with one magazine and three rounds of bullets, 10-kilogram of ganja and 20 bottles of phensidyl syrup from the spot,” the release also said.
