10,000 people form human chain to save Roumari from erosion

RANGPUR, Aug 06, 2018 (BSS) – Over 10,000 people today formed a four-
kilometre human chain from Paschim Pankhiura to Baispara points under Roumari
upazila in Kurigram demanding for construction of a flood control embankment
to save the upazila from erosion of the Brahmaputra.

Earlier, the people of Roumari upazila started protecting the four-
kilometre riverbanks of Baguarchar River Ghat, Paschim Pankhiura, Baispara
and adjoining areas by the side of the Brahmaputra few days back with bamboos
and trees at their own.

The Roumari upazila administration donated Taka 50,000, upazila parisahd
Taka 25,000 and Water Development Board (WDB) Taka 25,000 to local people to
stand beside them in protecting the vast riverbanks for saving the upazila.

In the today’s human chain programme, a discussion was also arranged
there with President of Roumari Upazila River Erosion Prevention Committee
Abdul Kader in the chair.

Among others, Superintending Engineer of WDB’s Rangpur Circle Engineer
Harun Ar Rashid, its Executive Engineer for Kurigram Shafikul Islam, Roumari
Upazila Chairman Mujibur Rahman Bangabashi, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dipankar
Roy, addressed.

Moderated by General Secretary of Roumari Upazila River Erosion
Prevention Committee Abu Hanif Master, a large number of teachers, students,
youths, farmers, union parisahd members, civil society members and elite also
addressed the occasion.

In their speeches, the speakers demanded for construction of the five-
kilometre flood protection embankment from Ghughumari to Foluar Char points
before commencement of the next rainy season to save the whole area from
river erosion.

Mujibur Rahman Bangabashi said hundreds of houses, vast tracts of arable
lands, properties of many villages under Bandober as well as Char Shoulmari,
Jadurchar and other unions of Roumari upazila might be devoured if the
embankment is not built soon.

Abdul Kader urged the present pro-people government led by Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina for taking necessary urgent steps, including
allocation of adequate finds, to save the whole Roumari upazila with vast
land and huge properties from river erosion.
