78.66 pc votes cast in RCC election

RAJSHAHI, July 31, 2018 (BSS)- Some 78.66 percent voters exercised their
voting rights in Monday’s election to Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC).

Atiar Rahman, District Election Officer and Assistant Returning Officer
for the RCC election, revealed this information while talking to local
journalists here this afternoon.

He said of the 3,18,138 voters including 1,62,053 female ones, 2,50,881 of
them cast their votes in 1,020 booths under 138 centres in all 30 wards of
the city corporation. The voters elected one mayor candidate, 30 general
councilors and 10 women councilors in reserved seats in yesterday’s city
corporation election.

A total of 217 candidates contested in the election. Of them, five for
mayor, 160 for general councilors and 52 for reserved seats for women
councilors.

AHM Khairuzzaman Liton (boat), Musaddique Hossain Bulbul (paddy sheaf),
Habibur Rahman (jackfruit), Shafiqul Islam (hand fan) and Advocate Murad
Murshed (elephant) were the mayoral aspirants.

In the election, Awami League nominated candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton
was elected mayor bagging 1,65,096 votes against his rival BNP’s candidate
Musaddique Hossain Bulbul who got 77,700 votes.

Atiar Rahman said the other three mayoral candidates — Shafiqul Islam,
Advocate Murad Murshed and Habibur Rahman bagged 3,023, 1,051, and 320 votes
respectively.
