Anti-drug drive to be continued: Benazir

DHAKA, July 29, 2018 (BSS) – Director General of Rapid Action Battalion
(RAB) Benazir Ahmed today vowed that the anti-drug drive would be continued
aimed at eliminating drug abuse from the society as part of the government’s
tough stance against the drug menace.

“The anti-drug campaign will be continued until elimination of drug abuse
in the country,” he said while addressing a workshop at a city hotel.

The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) organised the workshop titled
‘Action Plan to Prevent Aggression of Abusive Drugs’ with DNC Director
General (DG) M Jamal Uddin Ahmed in the chair.

Benazir Ahmed, in his speech, said, “The government has already declared
zero tolerance against drug abuse… it will do everything to build a drug-
free society.”

He said, “A section of people create chaos if we start any campaign
against drugs. When we start drive against militants, they try to find out
loopholes on TV talks shows. We will win the war against the drugs with help
of country’s people as we are employees of the state.”

Benazir Ahmed, also additional inspector general of police, said
following the Prime Minister’s direction, the law enforcement agencies have
already destroyed and rooted out militancy and their networks from the
country when they tried to establish their existence.

The RAB DG also requested security service division secretary Farid
Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury to set up separate jail for drug traders.

Benazir said during the 87 days anti-drug campaign, over 11,000 drug
traders and peddlers were given imprisonment while 55 drug traders died so
far.

He said at least eight camps in eight upazilas of Cox’s Bazar district
should be set up to curb drug trading, adding, “If all concerned work
together, drug traders will not be able to escape.”

Security Service Division Secretary Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Coast
Guard DG Rear Admiral A M M M Aurangzeb Chowdhury and ministry officials
concerned spoke on the occasion.

The DNC, in collaboration with the ministries concerned, has prepared a
draft ‘Drug Action Plan’ to comprehensively address the issue of drug abuse
and bring it under control through a multitude of initiatives and actions.

The action plan will ensure punishment and arrest of those persons
involved in drug abuse and their financiers through proper investigation and
trial along with confiscate all their financial resources by properly
enforcing Money Laundering Act, 2015.

The plan will be implemented in three phases-short-term, middle-term and
long-term.
