‘One crore people suffering from Hepatitis B, C in country’

DHAKA, July 26, 2018 (BSS) – Hepatology Society Dhaka in a scientific seminar today said around 325 million people living with viral hepatitis globally, of which nearly 10 million are Bangladeshis as they are infected with hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus.

The information was revealed at the seminar titled “Past and present prevalence of hepatitis B & C in Bangladesh and recommendations to eliminate it” organized by Hepatology Society Dhaka at CIRDAP auditorium here ahead of World Hepatitis Day 2018, which is going to be observed on July 28.

Chaired by renowned Hepatologist and President of the Society Prof Mobin Khan, the seminar was also addressed by former Vice Chancellor BSMMU and renowned virologist Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam, Professor Dr M A Faiz, Professor Nooruddin Ahmad, Prof Dr Abu Sayed, Dr Motahar Hossain, Dr Shahinul Alam, Dr Golam Azam, Dr. MorolNazrul Islam and Dr Md Golam Mostafa.

The key note presentation was delivered by Dr. Shahinul Alam, General Secretary of the Hepatology Society and Associate Professor at the Department of Hepatology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

World Hepatitis Day will be observed across the globe on July 28, 2018 with the aim to unite all individuals and organizations under the theme ‘Eliminate Hepatitis’.

‘Find the missing millions; get tested’- is the global awareness-raising and advocacy campaign. Out of the 325 million people living with viral hepatitis globally, 290 million are not aware of it.
