Five children killed in Cox’s Bazar landslides

COX’S BAZAR, July 25, 2018 (BSS)-Five children, including four a family, were killed in two separate landslides caused by torrential rains in the district early this morning.

Police and hospital sources said four children of the family were killed in Bachamiarghona area of South Rumaliarchhara of the district town when a big chunk of mud from the nearby hill suddenly collapsed on the house where the children were sleeping.

The dead were identified as Morzia Akter,16, Kafia Akter,10,Abul Khair,8 and Khairunnesa,6. All the victims, three girls and one boy, are children of Jamal Hossain, a local expatriate in Malaysia.

The victims’ Monther Chenuara Begum suffered critical injuries in the landslide.

Khorshedul Alam, a relative of the family, said the deadly incident occurred around 6:30 in the morning. Being informed, local people rushed to the spot and rescued the children and mother.

The victims were immediately sent to a local hospital where the attending doctors declared all the four children dead.

In the other landslide at dawn, one minor boy Moshed Alam, 6, was killed on the spot and two others suffered injuries as a huge chunk of mud from the nearby hill fell on their house at Pecharghona village of Mithaichhari union under Ramu upazila of the district.

The injured were admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
