Israel intercepts 2 Syrian rockets in false alarm

JERUSALEM, July 23, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – Israel on Monday intercepted two
Syrian rockets after sirens were triggered in the Israel-annexed Golan
Heights.

The two rockets were intercepted while they were inside Syrian territory,
a military spokesperson said in a statement. The projectiles were part of the
battles in Syria, and the launches of the rockets were identified as part of
the internal fighting in Syria, the spokesperson noted.

Prior to the interception, sirens were heard in the Golan Heights and
northern Galilee after Israel’s defense systems identified the rockets as a
threat.

“In response, the Israel Defense System launched two interceptors of the
David’s Sling aerial defense system,” the spokesperson said.

No injuries or damage was reported inside Israel.

The incident marked the first use of the David’s Sling defense system. The
system, designed to intercept medium-range missiles, became operational in
April 2017.
