Nasim for withdrawing ‘Valsartan’ medicine from market

DHAKA, July 22, 2018 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed
Nasim today asked the authority concerned to withdraw the medicine
‘Valsartan’, usually used for controlling blood pressure, as the drug may
cause cancer.

“Please take the medicine Valsartan out of market as it may cause deadly
disease especially liver, lungs and breast cancer,” he said at a meeting at
his ministry.

Valsartan is a common drug used to control blood pressure and help prevent
heart failure was announced by the US Food and Drug Administration on Friday,
a week after 22 other countries recalled it because the drug contains a
chemical that poses a potential cancer risk.

Nasim also asked the authority concerned to be careful so that the raw
materials of the medicine could not be used in other medicine.

In order to create awareness among people not to use the medicine, Nasim
urged the Drug Essential Limited to form an expert panel for following their
directives in this regard.

Health Education and Family Welfare Division Secretary GM Saleh Uddin,
Director of Drug Essential Limited Dr Golam Kibria, Bangladesh Aushad Shilpa
Samity Secretary General SM Shafiuzzaman were present at the meeting.
