DLS to set up laboratory test facilities at livestock farms ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

DHAKA, July 22, 2018 (BSS) – The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) will set up laboratory test facilities at the livestock farms across the country for controlling unhealthy chemical use on the sacrificial animals ahead of the holy Eid-ul Adha.

The decision was taken in an inter-ministerial meeting on “veterinary services at the Qurbani Hat on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Adha” held at the ministry here recently with Fisheries and Livestock Secretary in the chair.

The Health and Family Welfare Ministry’s concerned department will take initiative to control the supply and selling of all the steroid and hormone related drugs which are harmful for the animal health, it was told at the meeting.

Even the law enforcing agencies will strictly monitor at the border region to check the smuggling of these unhealthy chemicals and the police administration including the district-upazila administration will take initiative to control the use of these chemicals, according to the meeting.

The number of the sacrificial animals in the country is 1,16,000,00—where 44,57,000 are cattle and buffaloes and 71 lakh are goat and sheep.

In last year, the number of sacrificial animals was 1,04,22,000. Besides cattlehead, the country have healthy buffaloes numbering a total of nearly 29.20 lakh while there are 18.26 lakh goats and sheeps. The rest are unproductive livestock.

The meeting also decided that the veterinary medical team will also work at the qurbani hat in the city—where one medical team will work at the small hat while two medical teams will work at the big hat.

In addition to this, a total of four medical teams will work at the city’s Gabtoli hat.
