Public exam period to be shortened to avert malpractices

DHAKA, July 22, 2018 (BSS) – The authorities are working to hold public examinations in a shorter period of time from next year to stop any malpractices.

“We have got specific guidelines from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to reduce public examination period to bring a meaningful change in the education sector,” Dhaka Education Board Chairman Professor Muhammad Ziaul Haque told BSS today.

“Actually, there is no need of too much gap during public examinations — SSC and HSC — as it does not ensure good results of our examinees,” he added.

“In the 1980s and 1990s,” Ziaul said, “public examinations were held within a short time, which eventually helped avert any unfair practices….. We are working to hold public examinations within the shortest possible time.”

He said the government is now focusing on improving quality of education through introducing different modern and effective systems aiming to fulfill the target of Sustainable Development Goal-4 by 2030. The initiative to shorten public examination period will bring dynamism in the entire education, Ziaul said adding it is urgent to curtail unnecessary exam gaps to reduce mental pressure of examinees.

Praising the directive of the Prime Minister for holding public examinations within a shorter time, Rasheda K Choudhury, Executive Director of Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) said, “I fully agree with her to shorten public examination time schedule to stop unfair practices in the education sector.”

For a long time, educationists have been suggesting shortened public examination time schedule, she said adding, “We recommended a shorter public examination time schedule in different times. But the government did not follow our advice.”

Rasheda said, “A section dishonest persons are resorting to malpractices due to examination gap that hampers normal atmosphere of public examinations. Coaching business has rampantly expanded because of the longer period of time schedule of public examinations.

The directive to shorten public examination period will check question paper leakage, she said. “It will also help stop rumor, which ultimately misguides the examinees. ”

Rasheda urged the guardians not to be worried about the initiatives to shorten exam period. She also called upon all including teachers and guardians to groom the students to cope with a shorter examination period.

A longer period of exam schedule creates mental pressure on examinees, she said adding students would be relaxed, if the examination schedule is shortened.
