16,721 tons VGF rice allocated for fishermen during sea fishing ban

DHAKA, May 12, 2021 (BSS) – In the fiscal year 2020-21, a total of 16,721.32 metric tons of VGF rice has been allocated for fishermen during the 65-day period of fishing ban (from May 20 to July 23, 2021) in the country’s maritime waters.

“Under the government’s humanitarian food aid program, 2,98,595 fisher families in 8 upazilas of 14 coastal districts of the country have been registered for this assistance…Through this, each fishing family will get a total of 56 kg of rice for 42 days at the rate of 40 kg per month in the 1st phase (May 20 to June 30, 2021),” said a press release.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has issued a sanction order in this regard today in favor of the concerned Deputy Commissioners.

Instructions have been issued in the grant order to complete the regular lifting of VGF rice by June 10, 2021 and distribution among registered fishermen who refrain from fishing in the sea during the prohibited period.

The granting order also directed that the VGF could not be issued to anyone other than the cardholder, the press release said.

The allotted upazilas are Batiaghata, Dakop, Paikgachha, Koyra, Dumuria, Dighalia and Rupsha of Khulna district, Mongla, Morelganj and Sharankhola of Bagerhat district, Asashuni and Shyamnagar of Satkhira district, Banshkhali, Anwara, Mirsarai, Chittagong, Banshkhali, Chittagong and Chittagong. Sadar, Chakaria, Maheshkhali, Ukhia, Pekua, Kutubdia, Teknaf and Ramu of Cox’s Bazar district, Hatia, Sadar, Subarnachar and Companiganj of Noakhali district, Fulgazi of Feni district, Ramgati of Laxmipur district, Sadar, Kamalnagar and Raipur, Baridganj of Bariganj, Barisal district. Sadar and Uzirpur, Rajapur of Jhalokati district, Sadar of Barguna district, Patharghata, Amtali and Taltali, Sadar of Pirojpur district, Mathbaria, Bhandaria, Nazirpur, Nesharabad, Kaukhali and Indurkani, Sadar of Patuakhali district, Kalapara, Baufal and Galachipa of Galapali Sadar, Borhanuddin, Char Fashion, Daulatkhan, Lalmohan, Tajumuddin and Monpura.

In order to ensure proper breeding, production, conservation of marine fishery resources and sustainable fishery in the marine waters of the country, fishoing ban has been imposed for 65 days from 20 May to 23 July 2021 in the marine waters of Bangladesh.
