Two Hefajat leaders sent to jail

DHAKA, May 12, 2021 (BSS) – A court here today sent to jail Junayed Al Habib and Shakhawat Hossain Raji, joint secretary general and assistant secretary general respectively of the now dissolved committee of Hefajat-e-Islam, after end of their remand in separate mayhem cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman passed the orders as police produced the accused before the court one after another and pleaded to keep them behind the bars till the conclusion of probe in the cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Shikder on May 4 had placed Junayed on total four-day remand in three different cases lodged over Hefajat-e-Islam’s mayhem in May, 2013, and March, 2021.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury on April 26 had placed Junayed Al Habib on a total seven-day remand in two cases lodged over the group’s mayhem in the capital in May, 2013 and March, 2021.

He was arrested from the capital’s Baridhara area on April 17.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman on May 5 had placed Shakhawat Hossain Raji on total six-day remand in two separate cases lodged over the group’s 2013 mayhem in the capital.

Hefajat-e-Islam laid seize on capital’s Shapla Chattar area on May 5, 2013, unleashing inexpressible atrocities in and around the capital.

They vandalized hundreds of vehicles, shops and offices, setting many of those on fire. They even cut down hundreds of trees grown on the road dividers and used those as barricades to obstruct the law enforcing agencies.
