President, PM wish success of National Fisheries Week

DHAKA, July 21, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the fisheries sector has been playing an important role in earning foreign currencies besides eradication of poverty and creation of employment opportunities.

In separate messages on the eve of the National Fisheries Week, they wished success all programmes taken to mark the week across the country.

President, in his message, said observance of the week would encourage all concerned to gear up fish production and its preservation.

Bangladesh presently stands fourth in sweet water fish output, the president said adding, modern and planned fish production would ensure healthy supply of fish.

In her message, Prime Minister said the fisheries sector has been contributing to poverty alleviation, food autarky, protecting environmental balance and facing adverse impacts of climate change.

The government has been working tirelessly to use the benefits of Blue Economy in the overall progress and research and survey ships have been bought to carry out research and survey in this regard.

The week will be observed from tomorrow with this year’s theme ‘Shoyonshompurno Machhe Desh, Bangabandhur Bangladesh’ aimed at involving more people in fish production.

Appreciating the theme of the Fisheries Week- 2018, the Prime Minister said the government has attached importance to the fisheries sector considering its huge potentials.
