Speaker for providing legal aid to exploited, deprived people

DHAKA, July 21, 2018 (BSS) – Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury here today urged the lawyers to provide legal aid to the exploited and deprived people of the country.

“Every lawyer should play a vital role in providing legal assistance to the exploited and deprived people. ‘Rebellious Lawyering’ is needed to build up a society free from exploitation and discrimination. Rebellious lawyering also establishes and upholds rule of law,” she said.

She was speaking at the publishing ceremony of a book titled “Anti-Generic Learning and Rebellious Lawyering: Reflection on Legal Education in Bangladesh” at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at Dhaka University.

Former National Human Rights Commission Chairman and DU Law Department Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman authored the book which has been published by Bijoy Prokash.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin said Dr Mizanur contributed in legal jurisdiction and law education through the book.

“The book features very complex concepts of law. The book links law with other disciplines like sociology and anthropology. The book stresses on rebellious education of law and people’s access to justice,” she said.

Stressing on updating legal education, the Speaker said, “Our legal education should be contemporary and integrated so that our law students can overcome the challenges globally.”

DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman presided over the function. He wished the book’s widespread publicity.

DU Japanese Studies department Chairperson Professor Dr Abul Barkat and former member of National Law Commission Professor Dr M Shah Alam discussed on the book.

Professor Dr Rahmat Ullah, Dean of Faculty of Law gave the welcome speech.

Judges, lawyers, teachers and students of different universities joined event.
