RAJSHAHI, July 20, 2018 (BSS) – Massive tree plantation is very vital
for biodiversity conservation, addressing adverse impacts of climate change
and maintaining ecological balance in Rajshahi region.

Tree plantation is one of the biggest investments and extensive
afforestation can be the effective means of elevating socioeconomic condition
apart from protecting the high barind tract from desertification.

The observation came at a discussion at Green Plaza of Rajshahi City
Corporation (RCC) yesterday.

Department of Forest and Office of the Deputy Commissioner jointly
organised the discussion and a 15-day divisional level tree fair here aiming
to make the ongoing tree plantation campaign a social movement.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman, Deputy Inspector General
of Police Khurshid Hossain, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police
Hafiz Akter, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Nisharul Arif, RCC
Chief Executive Officer Shah Mumin and Superintendent of Police Md
Shahidullah, among others, spoke at the discussion with Deputy Commissioner
SM Abdul Kader in the chair.

Speakers said massive tree plantation is significant for reducing carbon
emission at a substantial level and there is no alternative to protecting
forests to maintain ecological balance in the country.

Nur-Ur-Rahman said afforestation could help stop degradation of
environment, ecology and biodiversity.

He urged people to plant at least three saplings each around their
respective homesteads or on any open space to help maintain environmental and
ecological balance and protect the region from growing natural disasters.
