REB to give 50,000-km line, 25 lakh new connections in 2018-19

DHAKA, July 19, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) has undertaken a plan to construct 50,000 kilometer electricity line and give 25 lakh new connections during 2018-19 financial year.

“The BREB has already brought 240 upazilas under cent percent power coverage and a process is underway to bring the rest of 220 upazilas under 100 percent electricity coverage,” an official of the power ministry told BSS here today.

The government’s sincere and relentless efforts helped BREB’s electricity coverage reach to 86 percent, while the total power coverage rose to 90 percent, he said.

The official said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina provided electricity connections to 1.57 crore clients during the last nine years and brought down system loss to 11 percent.

According the REB, currently the number of REB’s subscribers reached to 2.31 crore and distribution line at 3.97 lakh kilometers across the country.

The BREB is going to hold a two-day General Managers’ conference with a slogan of ‘Hassle Free Electricity’ at its headquarters at Khilkhet from tomorrow (Friday).

Earlier, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the government made significant progress in power sector and hoped to provide electricity to every home by 2021.

He said the power generation capacity would be 17,000 megawatt (MW) by 2018 as the government has undertaken a special initiative to supply electricity to every house by 2021.

The state minister said the power generation capacity reached to 18,753 MW, including captive power and the ministry has been working for building “Sonar Bangla” as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

He said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is pledge-bound to make “Digital Bangladesh” by ensuring access to power for all citizens by 2021.
