Agriculture minister visits research field of BRRI in city

DHAKA, April 18, 2021 (BSS)- Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque, MP, today paid a surprise visit to the research field of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in the capital to monitor the progress of research on high heat tolerant rice varieties invented by BRRI.

He paid the visit to BRRI’s research field to get a first-hand idea of what kind of research is being conducted by the scientists to deal with future high-temperature based disasters in the country, a press release said.

During the visit, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Director General Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir briefed the minister about various research plots.

Realizing the adverse effects of global climate change, BRRI started research since 2013 to innovate varieties which can endure high temperature, the release added.

During the visit, Abdur Razzak said the government has already taken various steps, including an incentive package of Taka 42 crore and assistance programme to help farmers affected by the high temperature and heat shock across the country.

At the same time, the government is emphasizing on developing high yielding rice varieties which can tolerate the high temperature, he added.

The minister highly commended the scientists of BRRI for their research progress and future plans for the development of various tolerant and nutritious varieties suitable for the hostile environment.
