Mujibnagar Day observed in Bangladesh missions abroad

DHAKA, April 18, 2021 (BSS) – The historic Mujibnagar Day was observed in Bangladesh missions abroad, including the missions in Kolkata, United Nations, Jordan, Ottawa and Washington DC in a befitting manner.

The flag of Bangladesh was first hoisted on foreign soil at 12:41 pm on 18 April 1971 at the Bangladesh Mission in Kolkata, India.

On 17 April 1971, at Baidyanath Tala in Kushtia – now Mujibnagar – the day after the first government of Bangladesh was sworn in, the Pakistan Mission in Calcutta was launched as the ‘Bangladesh Mission’.

To commemorate the day, this morning the officials of the Sub-High Commission in Calcutta marched around the Calcutta Sub-High Commission building with the national flag of Bangladesh.

Deputy High Commissioner Tawfiq Hasan hoisted the flag.

Wing Chiefs- Counselor (Education and Sports) Riazul Islam, Counselor (Consul) Mohammad Bashir Uddin, First Secretary (Press) Dr Mofakkharul Iqbal, First Secretary (Commercial) Mohammad Shamsul Arif, and Minister (Political) and Embassy Chief BM Jamal Hossain were present at that time.

Also, the commission is celebrating today as the ‘Bangladesh Foreign Service Day’.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the historic ‘Mujibnagar Day’ was virtually celebrated at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations yesterday.

At the beginning of the program, a special prayer was offered for the forgiveness of the souls of the President of Mujibnagar Government, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam and Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed and all the late members of that government, four national leaders and three million martyrs of the great liberation war.

The speeches of the President and the Prime Minister were read out on the occasion of the historic day. A documentary video on the Mujibnagar government was screened.

Ambassador Rabab Fatima, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, gave a welcome address on the occasion. She explained the significance of Mujibnagar Day and the history of how this temporary capital was named as Mujibnagar after the name of Bangabandhu.

Ambassador Fatima called upon the new generation to highlight the history of Mujibnagar government and the history and significance of the great liberation war.

In Bangladesh Embassy in Jordan, the historic Mujibnagar Day has been celebrated with due solemnity.

On this occasion, a webinar was organized by the Better Bangladesh Foundation (BBF), a partner organization of the Bangladesh Embassy and BIDA.

Ambassador Nahida Sobhan spoke as the chief guest at the webinar organized on the occasion of the day. Bangladesh Ambassador to Ethiopia Mohammad Nazrul Islam was present as the special guest.

Alijeh Ibrahim, International Coordinator of BBF Global was also present at the webinar conducted by Prof Masood A Khan.

The High Commission of Bangladesh in Ottawa and Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC observed the historic Mujibnagar Day in a similar manner.

Discussion sessions were held and munazat for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his martyred family members, four national leaders and the liberation war martyrs were offered.

In the discussion in Ottawa HC, All the discussants opined that through observance of the Mujibnagar Day, the new generation would be able to know the country’s true history and will be encouraged to contribute in building a ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Bangabandhu.

High Commissioner Dr Khalilur Rahman was present at the discussion.

In Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States M Shahidul Islam along with the diplomats working in the Embassy, ??placed a floral wreath at Bangabandhu’s sculpture, following a special prayer.
