Govt allocates over 31,000 tonnes of rice for fishermen

DHAKA, April 13, 2021 (BSS) – Under the government’s Humanitarian Food Assistance Programme, 30,921 tonnes of VGF rice have been allocated for fishermen to refrain them from fishing during the restriction period of fishing in fiscal 2021.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock today issued two separate orders to the Deputy Commissioners concerned in this regard, a ministry press release said.

To keep fishermen away from jatka catching, the allocation will be distributed among them in Dohar and Nawabganj of Dhaka; Shibalaya, Daulatpur and Harirampur of Manikganj district; Munshiganj Sadar, Srinagar, Louhajong, Tongibari and Gazaria of Munshiganj; Faridpur Sadar, Madhukhali, Sadarpur and Charbhadrasan of Faridpur district; Rajbari Sadar, Pangsha, Kalukhali and Goalanda of Rajbari district; Jajira, Bhedarganj, Naria and Gosairhat of Shariatpur district; Madaripur Sadar, Kalkini and Shibchar of Madaripur; Chattogram Sadar, Bashkhali, Sitakunda, Sandwip, Anwara and Mirsarai of Chattogram; Sonagazi of Feni district; Hatiya, Sobarnachar and Companiganj of Noakhali; Laxmipur Sadar, Ramgati, Raipur and Kamalnagar of Laxmipur district; Chandpur Sadar, Haimchar, Matlab North and Matlab South of Chandpur; Bagerhat Sadar, Mongla, Moralganj, Kachua, Rampal, Chitalmari, Sharankhola and Fakirhat of Bagerhat; Sirajganj Sadar, Chowhali, Belkuchi and Shahjadpur of Sirajganj; Barishal Sadar, Mehendiganj, Muladi, Hijla, Babuganj, Banaripara, Uzirpur, Gournadi and Bakerganj of Barishal; Pirojpur Sadar, Mathbaria, Bhandaria, Nesharabad, Nazirpur, Indurkani and Kaukhali of Pirojpur district; Patuakhali Sadar, Kalapara, Baufal, Galachipa, Rangabali, Mirzaganj, Dashmina and Dumki of Patuakhali district; Bhola Sadar, Burhanuddin, Char Fashion, Daulatkhan, Lalmohan, Tajumuddin and Monpura of Bhola district; Barguna Sadar, Amtali, Taltali, Patharghata, Bamna and Betagi of Barguna district; and Jhalokati Sadar, Kathalia, Nalchiti and Rajapur of Jhalokati district.

According to the government decision, the sale, transportation, storing and marketing of Jatka is completely prohibited from November 1 to June 30 every year. As such, the government provides humanitarian assistance to fishermen, who refrain from catching jatka for four months from February to May.

In another order, 1,001 metric tonnes of rice has been allocated for 25,031 registered families of fishermen in 10 upazilas of Rangmati and Khagrachhari districts, who have been living on the banks of Kaptai Lake.
