DHAKA, Oct 11, 2017 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker and Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) executive committee Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has drawn the attention of the World Bank on the Rohingya issue and called upon the international donor agencies to come forward to resolve the crisis.

“Bangladesh has set up a unique example before the global community in economic development of the country under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. But the Rohingyas, given shelter in Bangladesh recently only on humanitarian ground, have become a burden for the country,” the speaker said, addressing a daylong Parliamentary Network Workshop at Washington DC in the USA on Tuesday.

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) organized the daylong workshop on employment, technology, trade, education, climate change and disaster management at the IMF headquarters in Washington DC, said a press release issued from Washington DC today.

The Bangladesh government is working in creating skilled human resources, Shirin Sharmin said, adding that there is also a national skill development policy in the country which plays a vital role in the national development.

She underscored the need for finding alternatives to the fossil fuels to ensure the proper utilization of energy.

Bangladesh is at high risk due to climate change although it is less responsible for the global problem, the speaker said, adding that the country is working to ensure environmental balance through launching a fund.

She urged the developed countries to come forward to save the countries, which are at high risk, from the natural disasters caused by climate change.

Chairman of the JS Standing Committee on Public Accounts Dr Mahiuddin Khan Alamgir, MP, attended the workshop, among others.
