Climate change causing newer types of natural disasters: Maya
RANGPUR, July 16, 2018 (BSS) – Minister for Disaster Management and Relief
Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, has said Bangladesh is
experiencing newer types of natural disasters due to adverse impacts of
climate change.
“However, we have achieved laudable success in disaster managements by
implementing the farsighted directions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” Maya
said while addressing a meeting here today afternoon as the chief guest.
The district administration organised the meeting of the District Disaster
Management Committee at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner.
Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md Shah Kamal
moderated the event presided over by Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib.

Mostafa, Police Super Mizanur Rahman, Acting President of district Awami
League Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and its city unit General Secretary Tushar Kanti
Mandal, addressed the event as special guests.
High officials of different government departments, including district
administration, Water Development Board, LGED, Department of Agriculture
Extension, Fisheries and Livestock, Civil Surgeon Office, Fire Service and
Civil Defense and other organisations presented their preparations to face
the possible floods this season in the district.
Shah Kamal directed the district administration to form a committee
involving heads of different departments to assess the situation and meet
every month to forward suggestions to the government for taking actions to
face flood situation and conduct relief and rehabilitation activities.
He also directed heads of different government departments and
organisations to prepare their own contingency plans for facing the situation
during possible floods and submit those to the district administration for
better coordination.
The Minister said, “The time of appearance of rainy and winter seasons has
been changed causing early floods and river erosion in the country due to
climate change. The number of death toll from thunderstorms has risen to 300
to 350 annually.”
“The number of natural disaster prone districts has risen to 38 now from
15 to 16 due to climate change increasing intensity of disasters like floods,
droughts, cyclones, tides and other calamities from May to September months
in the country,” he said.
The Minister said there was not a single incident of any malpractice,
irregularities of corruption in conducting relief and rehabilitation
activities all over the country during any natural disaster time.
He called upon all concerned to work with utmost sincerity and honesty to
resolve any problem for proper disaster managements and said that the
government would provide necessary relief and inputs to every affected
person.
The Minsiter also announced allocations of 500 bundles of corrugated iron
sheets, Taka 15-lakh, Taka 6-lakh for making six boats, 200 tonnes of general
relief rice and 3,000 packets of dry foods for river-eroded and other
disaster-hit people of Rangpur district.
