Use of secondary data rises to find new taxpayers

DHAKA, July 15, 2018 (BSS) – The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been giving special emphasis on collecting secondary data from various organizations and agencies alongside collecting data directly to find out new taxpayers to further widen the tax net.

The revenue watchdog started to find out new taxpayers from internal survey or through secondary data for the first time at upazila level.

Talking to BSS, NBR member (tax survey) Dr Mahbubur Rahman said:”We’ve started working from the very beginning of the current fiscal year to look for new taxpayers. We’re collecting information from various organizations and agencies alongside collecting information by going door to door,”

He said this has simplified the task for identifying those who are capable of paying taxes or those who do not have the e- Taxpayer Identification Numbers (e-TINs).

The NBR member said information is also being collected on those who are receiving trade licenses from the city corporations or pourasabhas. “Besides, for the first time, information on the persons who are capable of paying taxes at the pourasabha and upazila levels is being collected through using secondary data.”

Mahbubur also informed that data is being collected on the foreign nationals working in Bangladesh from the Bangladesh Insurance Development Authority (BIDA), purchasers of vehicles from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), land purchase and sale related information from the sub-registry office and from various service providing agencies.

The number of e-TIN holders in the country is currently 36 lakh while the NBR has a plan to raise this number to 50 lakh by 2021.
