Conviction warrant issued against Huji militant in Aug 21 grenade attack case

DHAKA, Feb 24, 2021 (BSS) – A special tribunal today issued a conviction warrant against banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad Bangladesh (Huji) member Md Iqbal in August 21 grenade attack case.

Md Iqbal Hossain alias Iqbal alias Jahangir alias Selim was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the case in absentia as he was on the run till yesterday. He was arrested from Diabari area of Uttara at about 3 am of February 23.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of Dhaka 1st Speedy Trial Tribunal issued the warrant today.

Earlier on February 23, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah sent him to jail as police produced him before the court.

Dhaka 1st Speedy Trial Tribunal on October 10, 2018, sentenced to death 19 people including former state minister for home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and life imprisonment to another 19 including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on August 21, 2004 grenade attack charge.

At least 24 people were killed and around 300 injured in the gruesome attack on an Awami League rally on the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004.
