Around 3.51 lakh Rajshahi children get Vitamin A capsule

RAJSHAHI, July 15, 2018 (BSS) – Around 3.51 lakh children aged below five
years were administered vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules on National Vitamin ‘A’
Plus Campaign-2018 (first round) in the city and nine upazilas of the
district yesterday.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and Civil Surgeon Office have arranged the
campaign through adopting massive preparations. The campaign began at 8 in
the morning at 2,138 centres and continued till 4 in the afternoon.

Officials concerned of the RCC and Civil Surgeon Office here today
disclosed the information while talking to BSS separately.

RCC Chief Health Officer Dr AFM Anzuman Ara Begum said that vitamin ‘A’
capsule is essential for the normal functioning of the visual system, growth,
red blood cell production, immunity and reproduction.

The official said it also reduces the attack of diarrhoea and prevents
post-measles blindness. The successful campaign will contribute a lot in
removing vitamin deficiency among babies.

In city, around 7,435 children aged six months to 11 months were given
blue-coloured capsule of high powered Vitamin A and 54,155 children aged one
year to five were administered red-coloured capsule of high-powered Vitamin
A. The programme was conducted at 384 centres, Dr Begum added.

Civil Surgeon Dr Sanjit Kumar Saha said the national Vitamin ‘A’ plus
campaign was observed across the country to prevent childhood blindness,
child mortality and strengthen immunity.

In nine upazilas of the district, around 27,993 children aged six months
to 11 months were fed blue-coloured capsule and 2,61,808 children aged one
year to five were given red-coloured capsule at 1,754 centres.

A total of 1,744 outreach vaccination centres were set up. Over 4,480
volunteers, 376 family welfare assistants and 241 health assistants were
engaged for administering vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules to the children.
