JS body for plan of action to recover forest lands

DHAKA, Feb 7, 2021 (BSS) – The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Environment, Forests and Climate Change Ministry today recommended formulation of a plan of action to recover the occupied forest lands.

The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendation at its 18th meeting held at Sangsad Bhaban here with committee chairman Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the chair, an official release said.

Committee members – Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Zafar Alam, Tanveer Shakil Joy, Rezaul Karim Bablu and Khodeja Nasrin Akhter Hossain were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, it was informed that 1,286 mobile courts were carried out to check air pollution in the past five years (2015-16 fiscal to November 2020), while 2,001 cases were filed against polluters.

The mobile courts realised Taka 28,47,35,400, sentenced 16 polluters to jail in different terms and demolished 542 illegal brickfields during the period.

At the meeting, it was also mentioned that a Taka 25-crore ecotourism project titled ‘Sundarbans Environment-Friendly Tourism Facility Extension and Development’ was being implemented in the world’s largest mangrove forest. The three-year project is expected to be completed by 2022.
