DU VC for creating awareness of family planning

DHAKA, July 11, 2018 (BSS) – Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman here today underscored the need for creating awareness of family planning activities to check the growth of population in the country.

“A large portion of the marginalised people of our country is not still aware of the family planning. Students have to play a pivotal role in creating awareness among people to check the population growth of the country,” he said at a seminar at DU.

Department of Population Sciences of DU organised the seminar marking the World’s Population Day at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus.

While addressing the programme as the chief guest, DU VC Akhtaruzzaman said Rohingya refugee lack awareness about birth control which intensifies the crisis.

“Family planning is a prerequisite of human right. But around 2,000 infants are being born every month in the Rohingya refugee camps, he said.

Former Deputy Executive Director of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) Dr Abbas Bhuiya and DU Social Sciences faculty dean Dr Sadeka Halim addressed the programme as the special guests.

Professor Dr. AKM Nurun Nabi and Associate Professor Mohammad Billal Hosain presented articles on the issue.

Chairperson of population sciences department Professor Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam presided over the function.
